_In this course students will investigate 19th century history of the
United States with emphasis on the struggle to apply our democratic
ideals to a growing nation and its diverse citizens. Students will
examine the issues that arise with Westward Expansion, Slavery, the
Civil War, Reconstruction, Immigration and Industrialization from the
early 1800s to the turn of the century. They will consider
multiple accounts of events and issues in order to understand the
politics, economics, geography and history of this country from a
variety of perspectives, and further their understanding of social
studies concepts that will provide students with the ability to examine
their role in the community, state, nation, and world.
